We always use late-model vehicles with power steering and air conditioner.  The vehicles we choose are also sturdy (can take the punch) and learner-driver friendly. The simple answer is YES you can. But there are limits.

In the year 1995, the government changed to a credit card-type driving license. When this happened all the code 8 (code B) licenses were automatically converted to code EB licenses. That’s where a lot of the confusion comes in.

We often get calls where there is a person who is trying to buy a caravan or who already bought one and as soon as they want to do their insurance they get a problem concerning their license code. Sometimes by someone who has been pulled over and fined because they were towing a trailer with a code B license.

We then have to be the bearers of bad news. You have to start with your Learners License first and then you have to go and pass the driver’s test for the EB code license.

With the Code B license:

You may operate a vehicle (except motorcycles) with an unladen weight of 3 500 kilograms or less.

A trailer with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) of 750 kg or less may be towed by a person who has a code B license.

With the code EB license:

If you are looking to tow a trailer with a weight greater than 750 kg then you will need the EB License.

Someone with an EB license is authorized to drive all the vehicles that the person who only has a code B license has.

In the past registered Driving Academies were given the actual learner’s license tests. This is what we used to train students. It was simple. There were three tests. We would go through those three tests with our students, help them correct the questions they didn’t understand and they would go, write, and pass.

Unfortunately, the tests were leaked. This meant that no more proper training was given. People bought the three tests, studied them like parrots, went and wrote and passed. This was a problem. Because owning a learner’s license said that you knew the rules and regulations of the roads. But this wasn’t the case any more.

So the government moved us over to a computer learners test. These tests consist out of 1000s of questions. As soon as the applicant begins the test the computer randomises those 1000s of questions and then the test begins. And it is a test. You will have to know your stuff to pass this test.
